Creative and Crafty Gift Ideas

Here are two of our favorite creative and crafty gift ideas that are sure to please anyone on your list.

Cookie Mix in a Jar:
Layer the ingredients of your favorite cookie recipe in a mason jar-try a mix of ingredients like pecans, chocolate chips and coconut for the best looking result. Tie a festive ribbon on top and include a recipe card with baking instructions.

Another option would be to layer the jar with various candies. There are many different types of individually wrapped red peppermint candies from sweet to hot. Try layering three to five different flavors to make the jar look like a festive holiday candy cane.

Homemade Christmas Ornaments:
Making holiday ornaments is a creative and fun way to get into the spirit of the season. An easy place to start is to simply buy a box of traditional glass ball Christmas ornaments and personalize each one with glitter, paint and a pretty ribbon.

Want to get more creative and start from scratch? Then let's go back to the tried and true method used by preschools the world over.

  1. Simply mix flour, water and a pinch of salt until you have a thick, doughy consistency that easily holds its shape.
  2. Next, roll it out like cookie dough and use a butter knife, cookie cutter shapes or other instruments to cut out stars, Christmas trees, Santa faces or anything you want. Here is where you can really have fun. Try making smiley faces, 3-dimensional cookies with protruding noses and eyebrows or press tools like a meat tenderizer or the side of a comb onto the dough to create patterns.
  3. Use a pencil tip to press a small hole in the top of the ornament. After the ornament is finished, you will wrap a wire through this opening to hang it on the tree.
  4. Bake the soft ornaments in the oven at 250 degrees for 12-14 minutes. They should dry completely. Be sure to let cool for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Now it's time to decorate. Most acrylic paints will work well. Avoid using oil paints as they will take too long to dry. Paint both sides of the ornament so it will look great on the tree from all angles.
  6. Added Tip: After painting, spray the ornament with a clear enamel or varnish for a shiny finish.
